Garage shelf and tote fit
Estimate how many measured storage totes fit on your garage shelves, accounting for handling gaps and entered load limits.
Enter your measurements to see the result.
How the calculation works
For each orientation, count across = floor((clear width − edge gap) ÷ (bin width + gap)); count deep uses the same formula with depth. The larger uniform grid wins. The estimate includes a gap on every outer edge and between bins. If bin height plus lifting clearance exceeds the shelf opening, capacity is zero.
Assumptions and limits
This is a uniform rectangular grid, not a mixed-orientation packing optimizer. It assumes all usable shelf levels have the same dimensions and one layer of bins per shelf. It does not approve overhang, stacking, rim-supported rails, deck suitability, or anchoring. Weight-limited totals still require a compliant load distribution.
What to do with your result
| Result you see | Next check |
|---|---|
| Zero totes | Read the verdict: either the footprint or tote-plus-lifting height fails. A larger weight rating cannot fix a dimension failure. |
| Space-only total exceeds final total | An entered shelf or rack load limit is the constraint. For the default eight-position layout, a 100-lb rack limit and 35-lb totes reduce the result to two totes. |
| Two or more bins deep | The back row may require moving front bins. Count independently accessible positions separately when storing items used every week. |
Worked home-garage example
The starting shelf opening is 72 × 24 × 18 inches. Example totes measure 30.5 × 20.625 × 15.25 inches. With half-inch edge/between-bin gaps and 1 inch of lift space, two fit across and one deep. Four identical usable levels give eight tote positions. At 35 pounds each, that is 70 pounds per level and 280 pounds overall, below the example 200-pound shelf and 800-pound rack limits.
Use the result for your next decision
Replace outside rack dimensions with the actual clear shelf opening and supported deck depth. Then enter your loaded tote weight and the exact ratings. Reducing the example opening height to 16 inches prevents a fit because 15.25 + 1 = 16.25 inches is needed.
Common questions
Does a 27-gallon label establish the tote dimensions?
No. Measure the lid, handles and height of the exact tote. Bins with the same gallon capacity can differ.
Can I count mixed sizes or stacked bins?
This tool checks a uniform grid of one tote size, one layer per shelf, across identical levels. Check different shelves or bins separately; it does not evaluate mixed packing or stacking.
Can a calculated fit approve overhang?
No. The entered depth must be supported usable deck. A geometric result does not verify decking, load distribution, anchoring or rim-supported tote rails.
Check the next part of the layout
Once the bins fit the shelf, put the rack’s complete outside depth into the vehicle and storage clearance calculator. Clear deck depth and installed rack depth are different measurements. For overhead storage, also check rack underside and bin-loading clearance; this shelf grid does not approve a ceiling installation.
