Garage Shelving

Match the shelf to your bins, your wall, and your parking space.

Fit the belongings and the parking bay

Shelf shopping has two separate tests: will the frame fit the garage, and will the belongings fit the clear openings? Outside width cannot answer the second question. Record uprights, deck support, shelf spacing, and the widest lid or handle on each bin.

Choose depth before capacity

An 18-inch shelf can recover useful side space compared with a 24-inch unit, but only if it supports the items you plan to store. Large totes may belong on a deeper rear-wall rack. Avoid trading a usable car door for nominal capacity you do not need.

Build a short specification sheet

Write down outside dimensions, clear shelf dimensions, loaded-bin weights, per-shelf limits, total-unit limits, and anchoring instructions. Compare exact configurations: casters, replacement decks, and shelf positions may change the applicable instructions. Our guides separate geometric fit from load limits.

A common planning question

Does a 27-gallon label guarantee a tote will fit?

No. Capacity is volume, not a standardized outside footprint. Measure the actual tote with its lid fitted, then add room for handling.
