The practical answer
Wall-mounted cabinets preserve the floor underneath but need an approved structural attachment. Freestanding cabinets simplify floor-supported placement, yet may still require anti-tip anchoring. Compare usable access before appearance.
On narrow screens, scroll the table sideways. Manufacturer facts are distinguished from our planning guidance below.
| Choice or check | When it helps | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Wall-mounted | Clear floor below the cabinet | Verified wall structure and mounting |
| Freestanding | Floor-supported storage | Leveling and anti-tip requirements |
| Mixed cabinet and shelves | Different access needs | Door swing into adjacent shelving |
Product examples to check against your measurements
These research examples illustrate the choices in this guide; they are not a tested ranking or a complete market survey. Dimensions and model details come from the linked manufacturer or retailer. Fit and cost checks are our planning guidance. Check the exact model manual before buying.
| Example and source | Fit or limitation to verify | What to include in the cost |
|---|---|---|
| Gladiator Ready-to-Assemble Full-Door Wall GearBox View source details ↗ Read the model manual ↗ | GAWG28FDYG / GAWG28FVEW / GAWG28FDESG: manual W11727358A specifies 40 pounds per shelf and 150 pounds per cabinet. These resolve the conflicting promotional text for the listed models. Match the label and manual revision before installation. | Account for the compatible wall system and mounting requirements. An upper cabinet is not equivalent in storage volume to a tall cabinet. |
| Gladiator Ready-to-Assemble Large GearBox View source details ↗ | Manufacturer dimensions: 36 W × 72 H × 18 D inches. The listing offers an optional wall bracket kit; floor-standing and wall-mounted configurations need separate installation checks. | Include assembly, delivery and optional mounting equipment only for the selected configuration. |
Compare equivalent storage, not cabinet count
Separate cabinet-only, delivered-and-assembled, and mounted costs. Include rails or bracket kits only for configurations that require them. Two small upper cabinets and one tall cabinet differ in reachable shelf area, stored-item height and installation needs.
Plan cabinet depth and door access · Calculate storage clearance
Both formats still occupy the room
A cabinet mounted above the floor still projects into the garage at cabinet height. That can matter beside a mirror, car door, handlebar, or shoulder. Measure from the wall to the cabinet’s outermost closed point, then add the movement of doors and drawers.
A freestanding unit may have a different footprint at its feet than at its body. Include leveling feet, toe space, and wall clearance required by the instructions. Do not represent either cabinet as just a rectangle measured at floor level.
Compare the installation, not just the cabinet
Wall-mounted storage transfers its contents and cabinet weight through the prescribed attachments to the wall. Required framing, fastener positions, and rail details vary. Do not adapt a system to an unknown wall using hardware selected only by a package weight rating.
A floor-supported cabinet still needs a stable, level installation and any anti-tip attachment required by its manual. The distinction is where the main load goes, not whether installation instructions matter. Before purchase, download the manual for each finalist and confirm the actual wall and floor conditions.
A door-clearance example
Suppose a cabinet projects 18 inches from the wall and the parked vehicle leaves 38 inches between its side and that wall. That leaves 20 inches in front of the closed cabinet. If a door leaf projects another 16 inches while opening, the remaining gap at that position is only four inches, before allowing room for a person. This example is deliberately simplified; hinges and swing arcs can change the shape.
A closed cabinet fitting between the wall and car is therefore not enough. Use cardboard to model the full door leaf and a tape mark for drawer extension. Compare a different location, narrower doors, or another storage format when the operating space fails.
Think about cleaning and future changes
An open floor under wall cabinets can make routine sweeping easier, provided the clearance is actually accessible. Feet may leave corners that take more attention. Neither arrangement fixes water entering the garage, and a raised cabinet does not make unsuitable contents safe from humidity.
If you expect to move or change the layout, consider how much work it would take to relocate the system and repair mounting holes. Modular does not always mean freely movable after installation. Keep the cabinet manual and hardware specifications with the purchase records.
Compare a complete shortlist
For each candidate, write down closed projection, open projection, internal shelf depth, cabinet weight, shelf limits, anchoring method, and assembly requirements. A set may contain components of different depths; a single headline dimension should not substitute for each component drawing.
Choose only after those details pass your layout. It is reasonable to start with one tall cabinet and open shelving elsewhere rather than buy a full matching wall. That often keeps frequently used bins accessible while giving small loose supplies a closed home.
Build a comparable cabinet quote
For each quote, list cabinet body depth, handle projection, door opening direction, interior usable dimensions and included shelves. Then include the required mounting rail or anchors, legs or base, delivery and assembly. Compare the same amount of usable storage; a wide exterior dimension can hide dividers and hinges.
Wall mounting is worth considering when a clear floor or a particular mounting height matters and the wall can support the specified installation. Freestanding cabinets are worth considering when installation flexibility matters, but they may still require anti-tip anchoring. Do not count either format as movable after loading without consulting its instructions.
A cabinet can fit while its door cannot open
Tape the closed cabinet footprint on the floor and mark the handle projection. Add the door swing from the hinge, then park the car and rehearse removing your largest stored item. If a cabinet passes the closed-depth check but fails retrieval, a narrower door, a different location or open shelving may be a better purchase than a shallower version of the same cabinet.
Common questions
Do freestanding cabinets need to be anchored?
Follow the exact manual. Freestanding describes the format; it is not a promise that anti-tip attachment is unnecessary.
Are wall cabinets a solution for a narrow garage?
Only if their installed height and projection clear the vehicle and people using the space. Moving the footprint upward does not remove it.
