Planning guidance, not installation approval. Use your actual measurements and the instructions for your exact products.

The practical answer

Choose cabinet depth from the space available with doors or drawers open and a person using them. Compare interior openings and mounting requirements before finishes.

Start with the space in front

Cabinets have two footprints: the closed cabinet and the space needed to use it. Mark both. Include projecting handles, open doors, pull-out drawers, and the person standing in front. A slim cabinet beside a car can still be unusable if its doors cannot open.

Park normally during your mock-up. If a deep cabinet fits only with the car touching the opposite wall, that is not spare storage space. Consider a shorter rear-wall run or a shallower system instead.

Match the cabinet to what goes inside

List the tallest, deepest, and heaviest items before choosing a cabinet set. Long-handled tools may need a tall compartment without fixed shelves. Small hardware is easier to find in divided drawers than behind a large door. Bins need enough room to pass the hinges and door opening.

Closed storage reduces visible clutter, but it can hide forgotten duplicates. Labels inside doors and adjustable shelves make it easier to keep the storage useful as needs change.

Choose materials for the environment

Read each manufacturer’s intended environment and care instructions. Powder-coated steel, resin, and wood-based cabinets have different finishes, joints, and moisture limitations; a material name alone is not a durability guarantee. Check the actual product construction and warranty exclusions.

If water reaches the floor, solve the source rather than expecting cabinet feet to solve the problem. Raised cabinets can make cleaning easier, but wall-mounted units still need a verified mounting method and load capacity.

Compare freestanding and wall-mounted options

Freestanding cabinets can be easier to reposition but may still require anti-tip anchoring. Wall-mounted cabinets preserve an open floor underneath and can accommodate some uneven floors, but transfer their loads to the wall system. Neither format makes unknown wall construction irrelevant.

Ask whether installation hardware is included and suitable for your substrate. Do not improvise with drywall anchors when the instructions require structural attachment. Keep service access around utilities and appliances.

Buy in a useful sequence

A single cabinet for small supplies may solve more than a complete matching set. Add a work surface only if you have operating space for the tasks you actually do. Measure delivered package sizes and the route into the garage, especially for assembled units.

Before ordering, compare interior dimensions, shelf ratings, door clearance, lock behavior, leveling range, assembly work, and replacement-part availability. Do not assume a household storage cabinet is approved storage for fuels or other hazardous materials.

Check a cabinet at three positions

Mark the closed cabinet, the fully open door or drawer, and the position of the person using it. Consider a hypothetical 18-inch-deep cabinet with a drawer extending another 16 inches: the open front reaches 34 inches from the wall before allowing room for the user. Those example measurements show why a nominal depth comparison is incomplete.

Check the lowest doors against slab slope and the highest shelves against comfortable reach. If a cabinet crosses a step or service area, redesign the run rather than assuming leveling feet can resolve any height difference. Confirm the permitted leveling range and attachment method in the manual.

Worked example: shallow still needs opening room

Suppose the measured wall-to-vehicle gap at the cabinet is 40 inches. An 18-inch total closed projection leaves 22 inches. If the drawer projects another 16 inches when open, only 6 inches remain between its front and the vehicle. The closed cabinet fits; this is not a useful standing position for that drawer. These dimensions are a hypothetical layout, not a model specification or an accessibility standard.

A 12-inch total projection would leave 28 inches closed, but you must still measure its actual opening movement. A shallower cabinet, different door format or end-wall position can solve different problems. Do not assume reduced body depth automatically reduces a swinging door’s reach.

Specify usable interior dimensions before ordering

Ask for the opening between hinges and the clear shelf depth, not just the outside case dimensions. A long tool may fit diagonally yet block a door from closing. Check adjustable-shelf increments, shelf ratings, handle projection and whether the stated height includes legs or mounting hardware.

For damp locations, compare the exact panel material, exposed edges and manufacturer environmental limits rather than treating all painted cabinets as equivalent. Keep moisture-sensitive contents away from an unresolved water source. Wall mounting requires a permitted substrate and fasteners; it is not a shortcut around structural verification.

When an end-wall cabinet is the better purchase

Move a frequently opened cabinet away from the vehicle side when its doors compete with getting in and out. Recheck vehicle length, rear hatch travel and the route through the garage before accepting the end wall. Tall storage at a rear corner may be useful for infrequent items but frustrating for a daily charger or cleaning kit. The right location depends on what must happen with the car still parked.

The exact cabinet manual resolves the capacity conflict

Gladiator manual W11727358A identifies GAWG28FDYG, GAWG28FVEW and GAWG28FDESG on its cover. Page 3 specifies 40 pounds per shelf and 150 pounds per cabinet. Use these model-specific limits rather than the conflicting 410-pound cabinet and 55-pound shelf feature text on the product page. Our earlier shortlist already recorded this manual; the newer statement calling capacity unresolved has been corrected.

The clear opening width, usable shelf depth, door-open projection and complete wall-mounted offset remain unverified in the reviewed documentation. Do not derive them by subtracting guessed panel or hinge thicknesses from the 28-by-28-by-12-inch exterior. Request a dimensioned installed drawing when any of those measurements decides the fit.

A cabinet must pass three different fit checks

Common questions

Are wall-mounted cabinets always shallower?

No. Mounting format does not determine depth. Compare the exact outside dimensions and usable openings of the products under consideration.

Does the vehicle-clearance calculator check cabinet doors?

No. It checks rectangular storage projections entered by you. Measure door and drawer movements separately and rehearse access with the vehicle parked.

Is a 12-inch wall cabinet automatically suitable beside a car?

No. Mounting offset, handles, door movement and user access can extend beyond the catalog case depth.

Check this in your garage

Use the closed-versus-open clearance example with the cabinet’s verified installed dimensions. Then compare wall-mounted and freestanding cabinet formats; exterior depth alone does not establish access.
